On July 26, 2021, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) announced a new partnership initiative with PayPal to fight extremism and hate through means of disrupting the use of financial platforms by political extremists.

The Anti-Defamation League is an international Jewish non-governmental organization FiGHTINGHaTE FoRGoop _BASEd in the United States. It was ‘meso: egosnce2oe founded in 1913 by Sigmund Livingston, due to rising anti-semitism in America. The most significant event that sparked the organization into action was the trial of Leo Frank, which was surrounded by a surge of anti-semitism against the defendant. Leo Frank was a Jewish factory superintendent who was convicted in 1913 of the rape and mur- der of 13-year-old female employee Mary Phagan, in Atlanta, Georgia. He claimed innocence; the trial defense claimed Jim Conley, a Black janitor working at the factory, was the actual perpetrator. The trial largely relied Conley’s testimony that he had been an accomplice in the event, but was not guilty of committing the crime against Mary Phagan.

In 1915, the Governor of Georgia commu- ted Frank’s sentence from capital punish ment to life imprisonment. Soon after, a group of armed men took unlawful veng- eance kidnapping Frank from prison and subsequently lynching him. The new gov- ernor vowed to punish the lynchers, but nobody was charged.

In 1986, at the ADL’s urging, Frank was posthumously pardoned by the state of Georgia, but not officially absolved of the crime. The action also received support and encouragement from the American Jewish Committee and the Atlanta Jewish Federation. According to the New York Times, they argued that they should not have to prove Frank’s innocence; only that he was denied justice.
